History Week 2010

The Penguin Club in South Australia celebrated over 60 years of “Communicating with Confidence” by staging a display of historical items in a joint history week project in conjunction with the National Council of Women South Australia, the Girl Guides and the South Australian College of Midwives. Over 100 interested people visited the displays held over two days on 29 and 30 May, 2010 at the NCW premises on South Terrace, Adelaide.

SA Government Achievement Award

On Sunday 20th June 2010 at the Nexus Arts Centre Cabaret, Jan Sim, Training Officer SA, was delighted to accept, on behalf of the club, an Achievement Award from the Government of South Australia, Department of Families and Communities and Multicultural Youth SA Inc. This was “in recognition of their outstanding contribution to refugee and migrant young people in South Australia” and resulted from the series of workshops being held for women and girls from new and emerging communities of a refugee background.

Our thanks to Carmen Garcia, Director of MYSA and Elmina Joldic, Community Development Manager, MYSA for providing us with this encouragement to continue our work in helping migrant women and girls to develop their communications skills. (see 'News' above for more information)

The picture below shows some of the club members who thoroughly enjoyed the “Night of Stars”, a Refugee Week event hosted by MYSA.

Scholarship Winner

Congratulations to Mwajemi Hussein, member of the Campbelltown and City Groups, joint winner of the inaugural Jan Pentland Foundation Scholarship, awarded by the Australian Financial Counsellors and Credit Reform Association in honour of Jan Pentland who died last year.

Mwajemi has lived in Australia for only 4 years and was a refugee from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She received the award for her commitment to social justice and working with disadvantaged communities. Mwajemi now lives in South Australia and will use the scholarship to gain counselling skills in order to assist emerging African communities in that State. She is a wonderful ambassador for the Penguin Club and credits the Club with helping her to gain the confidence to speak in Public and address large audiences.

In Mwajemi’s own words: “At the judging I was asked how I had improved so much in four years. It was a big audience (about 300 people). I spoke about the Penguin Club and I could not believe I was so confident to speak for about 30 minutes. After my speech they were surprised I could speak for this time with no notes and they asked me about the Penguin Club. I am the first winner of their first project.”

We are very proud of Mwajemi, her achievements and commitment to our Club.
